FAQ
First thing that is good to know is that the road to Borgarfjörður eystri, road number 94, is paved all the way from Egilsstaðir and into town. That does include the mountain pass, Vatnsskarð eystra.
Driving downhill, down Vatnsskarð eystra in winter.
During the winter months, a 4×4 car is recommended as well as a car that has studded tires, at least having one of the two is pretty important. The most important is that you keep an eye out for the road conditions when you are traveling around Iceland in winter. Websites such as The Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration, Iceland Met Office, and SafeTravel are important sites to visit regularly on your travels during winter time.
We here at Blábjörg Resort are very flexible when it comes to the road being blocked to get to Borgarfjörður eystri, and you not being able to make it to Borgarfjörður eystri. If the road is blocked and the road authorities have advised not to travel over Vatnsskarð eystra mountain pass, we will offer a free cancellation. However, this also needs to be in cooperation with us here at Blábjörg Resort.
Driving in Iceland during the winter months can be like a magical adventure, but it can also be filled with blizzards and snow! Your mindset needs to be set to it and that will make the travels better for everyone.
The drive to Borgarfjörður eystri from Egilsstaðir is a little over 70 km and takes about 50 minutes. You head onwards on road 94, taking you on a paved road in a flat landscape all the way from Egilsstaðir to Vatnsskarð eystra. Vatnsskarð eystra is the mountain pass you need to drive past, and it reaches up to 430 m above sea level.
In summertime you do not need to drive a 4×4 car nor do you need studded tires, you can pass the mountain pass on a normal car.
During winter time, it is good to have either one of the two mentioned; 4×4 or studded tires. If you happen to have both, that’s even better, but not mandatory. Please see the info under “What are the road conditions in winter?” For more information on how to prepare yourself for traveling around Iceland during winter time.
In Iceland, the weather is always unpredictable. Therefore, you must always be prepared for shift changes in temperatures and conditions.
During winter months, November-March, the temperature can be all from -15°C up to +5°C.
During the summer months, June-August, the temperature can go all from 0°C up to 25°C.
Spring, April- May are usually mild, often with a bit of snow and a few frosty days.
Autumn, September-October, often brings a cold refreshing breeze. The winter frost starts sneaking in, freezing the ground during the night. This is also a super colorful time, as the grass and leaves start to become red, orange, yellow, and brown.
All in all, the weather in East Iceland is cold and snowy in the winter, and moderate in summertime.
There are multiple things available in town. See more information about the area here:

The Northern Lights, or Aurora Borealis, are visible all over Iceland, you only need a little solar activity, clear skies, and some good luck!
When looking for Northern lights, it is important to know that light pollution can mask the northern lights, finding an area free of light pollution is highly recommended.
If we look at the year as a whole- here are things to consider while chasing the aurora:
November – February: We have darkness, but the weather is rather unstable, cloud coverage can be a limiting factor.
March: The weather is more stable, and we still have enough darkness in the evenings.
April: until the middle of April, we have plenty of darkness, so Northern Lights can still be seen. After mid-April, the daytime starts to outweigh the nighttime.
May-August: May, June, and July are simply the months of the year when we have 24 hrs of daylight. Late August, it will be dark enough in the evenings to see Northern Lights- if you´re lucky!
September: A great month for Northern Lights! Stable weather conditions and dark evenings.
October: The weather is still more often stable, and we have plenty of darkness in the evenings.
We consider ourselves rather lucky here at Blábjörg Resort, as you do not need to go far from your patio or the pier to escape light pollution.
You can always predict the Northern Lights for the evening by looking at the cloud coverage forecast from the Icelandic Weather Station, you can find it here: Cloud Coverage Forecast!
However, keep in mind that there are 3 types of cloud coverage that we see on this chart, low clouds, middle clouds, and high clouds.
High clouds: They have the least effect on viewing the northern lights compared to the other two. They are at a greater distance from earth or about 3-8.000 m out. They are also a lot lighter than the other clouds, which makes them vaporous.
Middle clouds: They have the most effect on your chance of seeing the light or not. In that case, it is important to try and seek out a gap in the cloud coverage where there might be a possibility to see the lights. These middle clouds are located about 2-4.000 m from Earth.
Low-clouds: These ones can be tricky! They can reach from the ground and only up to 2.000 m from the earth. So putting this in perspective, in Iceland most of our mountains do not even reach up to 2.000 m in height, which makes it easy for the clouds to get “trapped” by the mountains. In these cases, it is not good to be in a fjord or a valley where the clouds can get stuck and block your view.
