Many tales of elves and hidden people and their interactions with humans come from Borgarfjörður eystri. Elves can be found in Álfaborg- where Borghildur, the elf queen of Iceland lives; in Lobbuhraun, Hvolshóll, Dyrfjöll, Sólfjall and even here in Blábjörg- where the elf bishop lives. The elf church- Kirkjusteinn, can be found in Kækjudalur, as well as Kollur, who also plays a role in the elf religion. Many creatures in popular folklore can be found roaming the area: the troll Gellivör can be found in Staðarfjall, Gletta in Glettingi, Gríður in Gríðarnes and the monster Naddi in the Njarðvíkur skrees (you might have noticed the cross on your way into town!). You may be familiar with the story “Móðir mín í kví kví”- she can be found in Loðmundarfjörður.
